A Brief History

  • Korea’s classical literature developed against the backdrop of traditional folk beliefs of the Korean people.
  • Modern literature developed out of its contact with Western culture, following the course of modernization

The modern period developed under the influence of Western cultural contacts based on trade and economic development.
The Changgok is a combination of music and poetry. The Hangul helped spread literacy from the dominant classes to the common people, including women. Sinsoseol are novels written in hangul.

 

The modern period is divided into 4 subcategories:

  • Period of Enlightenment
  • Colonial Period
  • Period of National Division
  • Translation of Korean literature in Foreign languages
